AI on the factory floor: what's actually useful for a South African manufacturer

When manufacturers hear "AI," most picture robot arms and seven-figure budgets. The AI that's actually paying for itself on South African factory floors right now is much quieter — and much cheaper. It reads paperwork, answers questions, and keeps watch. That's it. And it's worth real money.

Three uses that earn their keep

1. Capture — stop retyping paper. Delivery notes, supplier invoices, till slips: someone in your office spends hours a week retyping them into the system. AI document capture reads the photo — supplier, amounts, line items — and books it straight in for a human to confirm. It's the least glamorous AI there is, and it's usually the fastest payback in the building.

2. Ask your own data — in plain English. "Which jobs ran over on labour last month?" "Show me unpaid invoices over 60 days." "What did we spend with that supplier this year?" Predictive maintenance, computer-vision QC, demand forecasting — all real, all impressive somewhere. But for most SA operations they're a second chapter. They need clean, captured data to learn from, and if your job cards are still paper, you don't have it yet. That's not a criticism — it's a sequencing note.

The honest prerequisite

Every useful AI application above stands on the same foundation: your operation's data captured digitally, at source, as it happens. Materials scanned against jobs. Hours booked to steps. Invoices in a system, not a lever-arch file. AI doesn't fix missing data — it amplifies whatever you have. Garbage in, confident-sounding garbage out.

So the practical path for most manufacturers isn't "buy AI" — it's: get the flow captured properly first (that's what our manufacturing software does), then switch on the AI that's already waiting inside it.
